XVI Recap

October 25th, 2013

Plymouth Memorial Hall played host once again to Cage Titans this past Saturday night, October 19th. The fans packed the place and were treated to an absolute wonderful night of fights with the Main Card delivering quite possible TWO Fight of the Year Canidates. To some it up breifly, we saw the return of Ruso with a devestating spinning back-fist, headkick combo Knock-out, the crowing of 2 new amateur champions, two other amateur champions successfully defending their belts, the first ever female fight for Cage Titans and a Main Event that ended with a stunning uppercut KO in the first 10 seconds of the second round.

In the Main Event, two veterans squared off in Joe Cushman and Fernando Perez. The first round was super close, both fighters rocked the other, both landed takedowns and both did some damage with elbows and GnP. In anticipation of another back and forth round the crowd was on its feet but it was quickly silenced when during the opening exchange Cushman landed a huge uppercut, knocking out Perez just 10 seconds into the round!

The first of 2 new amateurs champions were crowned when Kyle Bochniak and Maxx Barrett faced-off earlier in the night. Barrett, giving up a lot of size, looked calm and composed doing well in the stand-up department as the fight began. Bochniak though may have just been waiting for his time to strike as about halfway through the round he landed a nice takedown, followed up with some hard hitting GnP before securing a rear naked choke for the finish, awarding him the vacant 155lb title. Next up Richard Hunter and Felix Gomez met in the finals of the Quest for the 170lb Title. In an all out war, Hunter and Gomez stood toe to toe with one an other trading shots for all 5 rounds of this championship fight. In the end, Hunter seemed to do a little more damage and was more effective in the exchanges winning him a Unanimous Decision on the judges scorecards and the 170lb Cage Titans amateur belt.

185lb Champion Mike Rodriguez was looking to bounce back after a little bit of a layoff and faced a tough test in challenger, Mark Glover. These two fighters were near identical in every category coming in to this fight, fight style, body type, record, etc. The difference in this fight as it played out inside the cage though was Rodriguez’ effective clinch and brutal knees. Rodriguez picked up the Unanimous Decision and kept the 185lb title tight around his waist. In the final amateur title fight of the night, 145lb Champion Peter Barrett successfully defended his belt, in what many are calling Fight of the Year, against Nestor X. Nestor came in with a feared submission game, a solid wrestling background and an undefeated 4-0 record with all first round finishes. Barrett did not let it effect him at all though as he is use to being the underdog, in his last fight he KO’d unbeaten, 5-0 Ruso Khubejashvili in the first round to capture the belt. A short summary could not do this fight justice as these two guys threw everything at one another during the first two rounds of this fight, huge takedowns, damaging strikes, deep submission attempts, you name it!  Close to the very end of the second round though, the tide seemed to have turned and as the round closed out Barrett was landing a barrage of ground strikes, in which the bell seemed to have saved Nestor. As they came out for round 3 Nestor dug deep and put everything he had into a couple of takedown attempts but Barrett was the much fresher guy and made Nestor pay for each attempt. The end came just about a minute into the round when the ref had to step in and stop the fight amist some brutal ground and pound strikes from Barrett, declaring him the winner and still champion. Below please find results as well as various media outlets that covered the event.
